Portuguese energy firm Galp is claiming a European first with the launch of the Galp Smart Store, an unmanned retail store located on a petrol station forecourt.
Situated on Avenida Gago Coutinho in Lisbon, the shop aims to provide a simpler retail experience by using technology from Portuguese tech startup Sensei that allows customers to buy products 24 hours a day without queuing or scanning. Having first downloaded and associated a bank card with the Sensei Shop & Go app, customers can simply enter the store, select the products they want and leave. Cameras, sensors and artificial intelligence systems keep track of what the customer has purchased and charges them accordingly.
Commenting on the move, Galp COO Teresa Abecasis said: “We are very excited to launch this pioneering project for our customers in collaboration with Sensei. This new Smart Store, which can be implemented in any part of the Iberian peninsula, allow us to tailor our offer to local needs and streamline the user experience through simplicity and speed”.
Sensei CEO Vasco Portugal added that he was proud “to be at the forefront of automation innovation in Europe”, especially “in areas where people will truly benefit in their everyday lives”.
Galp Smart Store is Sensei’s latest tie up with a leading Portuguese retailer, following its collaboration with Sonae for the Continente Labs cashless store, which opened last year.
