Mercadona, the Spanish supermarket chain, has announced the debut of its first store in Montijo, Setúbal district, the first of six new stores it plans to open across Portugal in 2022.
The new 1,900 square metre store will offer a typical range of food, drink, home and personal care items and will create 65 jobs. The store will also feature 430 solar panels generating up to 200kW of renewable energy.
Commenting on the store openings, Ana Carreto, director of external relations commented: “We are very pleased with the opening of our supermarket in Montijo, a town of great tradition. In addition to creating local employment, we continue to work to offer a wide daily assortment of top quality products.”
The new Montijo store is the retailer’s 34th in Portugal. Most are located in the Northern and Central regions of the country, in particular the Porto, Braga, Aveiro and Viana do Castelo districts. New stores are also due to open in Santarém, Viseu, Caldas da Rainha, Santa Maria da Feira, and Oeiras.
The six openings are part of a €150 million investment that Mercadona is planning to make in Portugal in 2022.
